SEPT 15TH, 2011 6:30-7:30PM
The Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, South and Central Chapter received a grant of $30,000.00 from Ronald McDonald House Charitieis to develop a lending library and interactive program room at their office on 7 High Streer in Grand Falls-Windsor. The classroom and library are now complete!!!
Autism is a lifelong neurological disorder that currently effects 1 in 100 in Newfoundland. The South and Central Chapter of the Autism Society cover over 130 communitiies and service close to 300 of these individuals. This lending library will provide an opportunity to not only individuals in the immediate area but also to those in more remote areas. Families from out of town will be able to view the list of resource material online and borrow material, have it shipped, at no cost to them.
The interacvtive program room will assist the South and Central Chapter in offering onsite programming for inividuals of all ages affected by Autism. They are currently being overwhelmed with individuals calling to book in times for the upcoming fall programming sessions. Currently they offer a variety of programs onsite and these require specialized materials and equipment in order to further aid in the development of the participants.
Thanks to this grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities, ASNL South and Central will be able to touch the lives of many individuals who are coping with Autism everyday.
Kimberly-Ann McDonald, Regional Program Coordinator and TEACCH Practitioner for the South and Central Chapter says "with the equipment and resouces we now have access too through this grant, we are able to offer individualized programming to a large number of individuals, the fall sememster is just around the corner and we have mulitple programs running daily!"
